The Karnataka government is to hold a ‘Makara Sankranti Suggi-Huggi Habba’ on January 14 to give Bengaluru residents a glimpse into the harvest festival and farmers' culture and traditions. Hosted by the Karnataka Kannada and Culture Dept along with the Agriculture Department, the day-long Suggi-Huggi Habba festival will be held at Lalbagh (near the rock) from 10 am to 6 pm.
The habba will showcase harvest celebrations from six different regions of Karnataka, and would include farmers performing Raashi Pooje, a thanksgiving for their harvest. The habba would offer residents of the city the opportunity to indulge in village traditions such as kite flying (free kites for early comers) and ‘Sankranti-saavari’ on bullock-carts. Folk songs and dances would be performed throughout the day. Residents would have the chance to sample huggi and pongal and traditional foods at the organic and millet food courts.
The festival would also give residents the opportunity to buy rural village crafts and view a display of decorated bulls and witness the exhilarating fire-crossing, a hallmark of Sankranti celebrations.
