The Tamil Nadu government is confident that at least 50 companies engaged in aerospace and components industry will set up shop in its upcoming aerospace park at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.

“More than 15 companies have been given in-principle land allocation approval in Phase 1 of project, which will come up on 250 acres.

The construction work will begin shortly,” said B Elangovan, Managing Director, Tidel Park, while addressing a CII conference on aerospace and defence industry.

The State government’s proposed Advanced Computing and Design Engineering Centre, which is coming up in the park, is expected to act as a catalyst to promote aerospace industries.

The Centre will have super computing facilities, 3-D printing, virtual studios, prototype development, centre of excellence, skill development facility, avionics manufacturing complex and others for supporting aerospace segment.

Also, a multi-floor aerospace manufacturing complex will soon come up in the aerospace park.

Elangovan said an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul complex near the Chennai airport is expected to come up.

“There is a ₹5,000-crore opportunity in this business in India. But as of now only 10 per cent of the business has been tapped,” he said adding, “Chennai has all capabilities in emerging as the preferred destination for MRO activity. We encourage any operator to set up an MRO unit anywhere in TN,” he said.

Tamil Nadu has a strong pool of skilled human resource with 5,000 aerospace engineers graduating from more than 70 engineering colleges and universities.

Jayakar Krishnamurthy, CII Conference Chairman & Chairman and Managing Director, Ucal Fuel Systems, stressed on the need to ramp up R&D investments to grow the aerospace and defence segments in India.

He was in favour of developing an ecosystem similar to that of successful automotive industry model, which comprised tier 1, tier 2, tier 3 and R&D.
