Water scarcity in Mangaluru is affecting the major industries in the region.
After Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) initiating shutdown of its phase-III units on Thursday, now it is the turn of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) Ltd to follow suit.
Sources in MCF told BusinessLine that the urea-manufacturing unit of the company will go for a complete shutdown from Friday night due to non-availability of water. The MCF plant in Mangaluru requires around 2 MGD (million gallons a day) of water. The Mangaluru City Corporation was meeting this requirement of the company from the Thumbe reservoir built across Nethravathi River.
Following the water scarcity in the region, the district administration has completely suspended water supply to industries, including MCF, on April 26.
The district administration had reduced the amount of water being supplied to the industries even before that, they said.
MCF is a subsidiary of Zuari Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd.
