Experts at a seminar on organic food in Mangaluru have urged the producers and consumers to ensure the quality of organic food products for a stable market for them.

Speaking at the inauguration of a seminar on Friday, Addoor Krishna Rao, President of Organic Farmer Consumer Forum, urged the stakeholders to ensure the quality of organic food products when they buy or sell them. He said many people in the market are cheating the consumers in the name of organic products. This is not a good development, he said.

Some of the major ayurvedic manufacturers are producing chyavanprash in large quantities. He wondered how the country can produce so much ‘amla’ required for the production of chyavanprash. Can consumers expect a quality chyavanprash in such cases, he asked?

Those who can afford to set up terrace gardens or kitchen gardens in their homes should focus on producing organic food products. This will help them meet their requirements, he said.

Keshavaraj, an ayurvedic practitioner from Mangaluru, urged the Karnataka Government to provide a permanent place for marketing the organic food products in Mangaluru. Highlighting the efforts of Organic Farmer Consumer Forum in this regard, he said the forum has been organising bi-weekly markets for organic food products since several months.

Allocation of a permanent place for such efforts will ensure that consumers would get organic food products at a designated place, he said.

He suggested that the Karnataka Government set up a unit to produce ayurvedic products on the lines of Kerala Government.

Speaking on the occasion, JR Lobo, MLA of Mangalore South, said that a place will be allocated in a Mangaluru market to carry out weekly market for organic products. Organic food producers can also make use of the facility at Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, which is on the outskirts of the city, he said.
