The eminent space scientist and former Chairman of ISRO UR Rao has highlighted the role of space technology in improving agriculture productivity in the country.
In an interaction with students of various schools from Dakshina Kannada district at The Yenepoya School in Mangaluru on Thursday, he said that the country needed an ‘evergreen revolution.’ Space technology can play a major role in it, he said.
Urging the Agricultural Department to make the best use of space technology, Rao said the agriculture inputs must be dictated by what the space imagery tells about the fields.
Now the forecast on farm production is based on the information provided by some local level revenue officials, with varying degree of accuracy.
The space imagery provided by ISRO satellites contributes significantly to the production forecast also.
Recalling a recent visit to the US where he had met a farmer, Rao said the farmer regularly used images taken by ISRO’s remote sensing satellites to improve productivity on his 2,000 acres of land.
Indian farmers should also be able to get such benefits from space technology, he said.
