Sports-mad Kerala will launch itself into a frenzied run ahead of the start of 35th National Games here with brand ambassador and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, no less, in the lead.
Styled Run Kerala Run, the group run is being organised across the State to celebrate the historic event when the State is hosting the Games after a gap of 28 years.
Historic Event
The run will be taken out between January 20 and 22, 2015, to declare solidarity with the Games and welcome sportspersons, sports organisers, and sports lovers from different parts of the country.
The National Games will be held from January 31, 2015 to February 14, 2015.
The final round of preparations at the main centres, including the Greenfield stadium at Karyavattom near the capital city where the opening and the closing ceremonies will be held, is nearing completion.
The details were spelt out here in a press conference addressed by State Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and National Games CEO Jacob Punnoose.
To be replicated at 7,000 centres in the State, Run Kerala Run promises to be the biggest and the most popular event witnessed in the country going by the sheer scale of participation.
Chief Minister to participate
State Chief Minister and Cabinet colleagues, sports and film stars, cultural leaders, political leaders, students, residents associations, business establishments, and varied organisations are expected to line up for the event.
The group run will cover distances ranging from 200 metres to 800 meters. Schools, academic and other institutions, institutions, organisations, and the general public will be represented in strength by the wayside as the run picks up steam.
Every village panchayat will have seven points and a ward in the municipality/ corporation, one point where the runners can converge. Members of the public can join from any centre they like. The names of centres will be published later.
Students of all educational institutions are expected to participate as would Government officials and private sector executives.
Special Instructions
To ensure the participation of students, the department of education proposes to issue special instructions. Different government departments have also promised to cooperate.
The police, the armed forces, the NCC, and the student police will volunteer their services for the success of the group run.
At the district-level, the run will be held under the leadership of a minister. A special control room will be opened to coordinate the event.
Special awards will be given away to those who organise the group run in a commendable manner. At selected points along the way, runners will break into patriotic song and make a pledge expressing solidarity with the National Games.
