The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has written to Chief Ministers and Finance Ministers of all States to take steps to check entry of goods purchased from online retail portals. The traders’ body claimed goods were entering States without the knowledge Governments concerned. The Odisha Government has already issued a notification directing courier companies and transporters to file a return with authorities for items being brought into the State from online portals, CAIT said.
In a statement, Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General, CAIT, said there should be specified rules & regulations for the e-commerce business in India. “Online retail portals are avoiding tax liabilities due to absence of any check on their business module. The consuming States are deprived of the revenue for goods consumed in their respective States but purchased from online portals registered in other States,” he added.
