With Collector Anshul Mishra and Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellapa unveiling the logo and launching a Web site here on Friday, the celebration of ‘Maamadurai Pottruvom’ (Celebrate Madurai), kick-started in the city on Friday. The event is scheduled for February 8, 9 and 10.
The logo depicts the colourful streets and four gopurams of the famous Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple besides the legendary Vaigai River.
District Collector Anshul Mishra said that Madurai’s tradition, antiquity, culture and history will be highlighted in the three-day celebrations.
The third day to celebrate river Vaigai is aimed at creating awareness among the public about the legendary river.
The public works department, district administration and Madurai Corporation will do the needful by beautifying and cleaning river Vaigai to give it a facelift ahead of the celebrations, he said.
Mayor Rajan Chellapa said a plan has been submitted to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa seeking funds to beautify river Vaigai and the beautification works on the river will begin as soon as the funds are allotted.
