EC bans telecast, broadcast of poll results

The Election Commission has banned the telecast and broadcast of poll results of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Orissa and Arunachal Pradesh. According to a communique , any telecast or broadcast will have a serious impact on the elections in Bihar to be held on March 11, 15 and 19. The Commission has directed that no programmes with election trends, interviews of political personalities and projections of the results should be telecast.

India too may face trade curbs: Kantor

After China, it could be the turn of India, Brazil and Argentina to face action by the US, including trade sanctions, over the issue of copyright and patent protection, a senior US official has said. Mr. Mickey Kantor, the US Trade Representative (USTR) told the House Ways and Means Committee that the US would not “stand idly by and allow patent rights of American companies to continue to be violated”. He assured the Trade Sub-Committee of the House body that he had made it clear to Brazil. Argentina and India that Washington would take a uncompromising position.

SCICI fund crunch hits shipping industry

The shipping industry has been hit hard by the liquidity problem being faced by SCICI Ltd. The industry has already been affected by the Government's cap on external commercial borrowings (ECBs). At a recent meeting with SCTCI, shipowners were told by the financial institution that it did not have enough funds to disburse to the shipping industry. So far this year, SCICI has disbursed more than Rs. 500 crores both as foreign currency and rupee loans to the shipping sector.
