PMP Auto Components, an Ashok Piramal group company, is in talks with Maruti Suzuki to supply wipers to the new Alto scheduled for launch towards the end of this fiscal.

“As we have been supplying wiper systems to the Alto, we will most likely continue doing so for the new (Alto) programme,” said Mr S.N. Somani, Executive Director and CEO. PMP recently kicked off production of wiper systems at its Satara plant in Maharashtra.

At present, there are eight versions of the Alto with prices ranging from Rs 2.3 lakh to Rs 3.4 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The market buzz is that the new version will be a lot cheaper and is intended to take on the Tata Nano whose top-end version is a little over Rs 2-lakh. The Alto is also India's largest single selling model with monthly numbers averaging 20,000 units. The stripped-down version could help boost this by at least 25 per cent, sources say, considering that the Nano is now averaging 7,000 units a month.

According to a Crisil report, India's compact car segment accounts for around 60 per cent of overall passenger vehicle sales. As against seven players and 14 models in the segment in 2007, there are 10 players and 24 models today.
