A national market survey on the scope of coir products promotion has recommended quality upgrade and aggressive marketing in non-coir producing States.

The report mentioned lack of awareness among the public, particularly the youth and especially in non-coir-producing States, about how eco-friendly coir fibre is on one hand, and how poor quality and delayed delivery of products hinders the growth of domestic sales of coir products on the other hand.

The report was released at a function organised by Cluster Pulse, the implementing agency of the Small Industries Development Bank of India-aided Alappuzha Business Development Services (BDS), of the Alappuzha Coir Cluster, in connection with presentation of the Best Coir Design and Best BDS Provider awards -2011.

Alappuzha BDS project Director, Mr Jagat Shah, released the report, prepared by Centre for Business Research Counselling, a consortium of BDS providers empanelled with the Alappuzha BDS, by giving its first copy to Coir Board Director, Marketing, Mr M. Kumaraswamy Pillai, at the function. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Pillai lauded the role played by Cluster Pulse during the past three-and-a-half years in helping Alappuzha Coir Cluster stand out from other projects.

Cluster Pulse

Mr Shah said his Ahmedabad-based Cluster Pulse, which operates in 11 countries and with 12 offices in India, had contributed largely to introduce coir products in the global market during the past three-and-a-half years of its involvement with Alappuzha Coir Cluster. He said quality of products and designs played an important role in the promotion of coir products both in the domestic and overseas markets.

He said the Indian coir industry had great scope to exploit the huge domestic market, of which a only small percentage had been tapped so far, and expressed hope that recommendations of the survey report would help the industry in the near future.

Coir Board Secretary, Mr M. Kumararaja, the bank's Deputy General Manager, Ms Indumadhi Sridhar, and Federation of Indian Coir Exporters Associations Chairman, Mr John Chacko, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Cluster Pulse General Manager, Mr Koteswara Rao, welcomed the gathering, and Project Manager, Mr Pankaj Ahir, proposed the vote of thanks.
