Certification firm Underwriters Laboratories has opened a water testing and certification laboratory in Bangalore. Said to be UL's first facility outside the US and the country's first third-party facility for water, the lab will focus on analysing commercial drinking water for safety and for various industrial purposes, a release said. It said the lab would encourage water distributors to test their products for quality and safety standards and benefit water product manufacturers and treatment technology vendors who were looking at entering global markets. The lab employs local experts. Mr Venkitachalam, Vice-President and Managing Director, UL Emerging Markets, said, “With India facing significant water challenges, it is necessary to look at the safety of water as it is directly linked to health, sanitation and social stability. The addition of this laboratory to UL's portfolio of services is a key strategic platform for our growth in this market.” India was a strong, emerging market and UL had studied its water quality issues, said Mr Jeff Smith, General Manager and UL Global Water Business.
