Centre proposes 4000 mw power plant by NTPC for Telangana

To address the power shortage in the Telangana region post the division of Andhra Pradesh, the Central Government has proposed setting up of a 4000 mw ultra mega power project by NTPC.

The power sector giant will take up the development of the plant for Telangana once it secures coal linkages. With concerted efforts, the coal requirement could be part-met from the State-owned coal mining company Singareni Collieries Company Limited supplemented by other sources.

Post the division of Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and Seemandhra (residual Andhra Pradesh), the Telangana region is likely to be short by about 2000 mw. While efforts would be made to bridge the gap through Central generating stations and purchases, setting up of a mega power plant would be a long-term solution.

NTPC has a super thermal power project in Ramagundam. It is exploring the possibility of expansion at the site. During a recent interaction, the NTPC management had indicated at the move to expand and also consider purchase of power assets.

In its efforts to boost the infrastructure in both the regions, the Centre has proposed several projects including a major port Duggirajapatnam, a feasibility study of a steel plant by SAIL in Telangana, a steel plant by SAIL in Kadapa, IOC and HPCL to explore the possibility of a petrochemical complex, and to consider development of existing airports at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupathi.

While taking up a feasibility study of developing Vizag-Chennai industrial corridor, NHAI will seek to develop roads and Indian Railways to consider a rail coach factory in Telangana.

The Government will explore the feasibility of metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali.
