Just days after agreeing to resume duty following a settlement, a section of workers at the Royal Enfield factory in Oragadam near Chennai struck work again on Monday, accusing the management of restrictions on carrying mobile phones inside the factory.

“It was agreed to maintain status quo after a meeting with Labour Department official and we were ready to resume work. But the management failed to maintain status quo by not allowing the workers to carry their mobile phones inside the factory. It was allowed earlier. However, we asked for a communication point for our family members to reach us in emergency situations. They refused to provide any such facilities. Also, we sought a locker facility to keep our phones during our working hours. They didn’t consider that too,” R Sampath, Vice-President of Royal Enfield Employees Union, told BusinessLine .

He said more than 1,000 workers, including contract workers, were on strike to protest the management’s ‘unacceptable’ behaviour.

The union members have informed the Labour Department and the officials have indicated that they would look into the issue on Wednesday. A communiqué of Royal Enfield to the stock exchanges said: “A section of the workforce at the Oragadam facility near Chennai, did not report for work. This has resulted in loss of production of 10,000 motorcycles in September 2018.”

Meanwhile, the labour unrest at Yamaha factory at Oragadam also continued for 11th day with no solution in sight. A union member said: “We are continuing our sit-in strike near the factory and protests are held in various parts of the city against the management’s opposition to the formation of a union.

The Labour Department is expected to call for a reconciliation meeting on Wednesday.
