Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) is going for a planned maintenance shutdown of Phase-3 units from April 15.

M Venkatesh, Director (Refinery) of MRPL, told BusinessLine that petrochemical fluidised catalytic cracking unit (PFCCU) and polypropylene (PP) unit will be shut down for 25-30 days from April 15.

Asked if the water scarcity in the Mangaluru region is the reason for the shutdown, he said maintenance shutdowns are planned eight months to one year in advance. This was also planned well in advance.

Water scarcity

To a query on the water requirement for the refinery, Venkatesh said the refinery requires around 13 million gallons a day (MGD) in the normal course. Due to the current situation in the region, efforts have been made to reduce fresh water requirement to around 10 MGD till the end of May.

With the maintenance shutdown of PFCCU and PP units, the fresh water requirement is expected be reduced by around 1 MGD, he said.

The feedstock for the polypropylene plant — polymer-grade propylene — is being produced from the refinery’s PFCCU. Polypropylene is used in the manufacture of plastic and various types of moulds.
