The setting up of Ultra Mega Steel Plants is not feasible as States have not supported the proposal, Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma said on Thursday.
States such as Gujarat, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala and West Bengal have not supported the concept, Verma informed Rajya Sabha.
The Minister said that the main facilities required for setting up the steel plants are land, iron ore linkage, coking coal, power and water, among others. These are either under the purview of other Ministries or concerned States.
“However, the responses from State on the concept of Ultra Mega Steel Plants have not been encouraging.”
The Steel Ministry does not have any regulatory or statutory power in this regard, according to Verma. The Ministry acts only as a facilitator or co-ordinator.
