The Government has announced a time bound action plan to set the second phase of Green Revolution in motion. This will involve increasing the production of pulses and oilseeds in the eastern region with the help of high-yielding seeds.

This was decided in a review meeting held at the Prime Minster's Office. The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister chaired the meeting, while six Secretaries, including the Agricultural Secretary, attended. Government sources said that the PMO has directed the Agricultural Department to come with an action plan within a month for increasing the production of pulses and oilseeds through the cluster mechanism. It has also asked the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) to develop high-yielding pulses and oilseeds within two years.

The Government has already announced that it will provide Rs 300 crore to promote 60,000 ‘pulse villages' in rain-fed areas for increasing crop productivity and strengthening market linkages. An equal number of village clusters for oilseeds has also been planned.

Self-reliance by 2017

The Government aims to achieve self-reliance in the production of pulses and oilseeds by 2017.

Meanwhile, with so many complaints about the lack of storage facility after the bumper crop, the PMO has asked the Food Corporation of India to fast track the creation of storage facilities in 19 States to enhance the capacity by more than 150 lakh tonnes. FCI has been asked to develop 40 lakh tonnes of storage capacity by March next year.
