The low-pressure area over north Chhattisgarh has weakened after losing out in a battle of nerves with a persisting prankster cyclonic circulation positioned latest over northwest Madhya Pradesh.
No sooner had the system weakened than an heir apparent signalled its arrival over northwest Bay of Bengal this afternoon.
PREPARATORY WHIRL
An India Met Department update said that a preparatory upper air cyclonic circulation has already claimed a perch high over the northwest Bay.
It would need to descend to the appropriate level to initiate the formation of what looks like another ‘low’, fifth in the series as if on an assembly line from the Bay.
Elsewhere, the offshore trough switched back to its usual alignment and stretched out in full from south Gujarat down to the Kerala coast.
This helped trigger a round of showers over Kerala, the southern parts of which had failed to benefit from the revival of monsoon in recent times.
Meanwhile, the 24 hours ending Friday morning saw Gujarat, western Maharashtra and the west coast being pulverised by an unrelenting monsoon.
HEAVIEST IN DWARKA
Dwarka received extreme high rainfall of 39 cm during the period, followed by some distance by Bulsar (19 cm); Mahabaleshwar (18 cm); Veraval (15 cm); Diu and Mangalore (14 cm); Okha (12 cm); Kochi airport (11 cm); and Bhira, Honavar and Thrissur (10 each).
Monsoon fury was particularly targeted at Gujarat which sat right under a remnant circulation from an earlier monsoon depression from the Bay.
Presence of a potent offshore trough to the west-southwest and a peer circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh meant that the region was awash with moisture.

Saturday, Aug 2 : Heavy to very heavy rains seen over Konkan, Goa, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Kerala.
Heavy over Assam, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch.
Sunday, Aug 3 : Heavy to very heavy over coastal and south interior Karnataka. Heavy over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Konkan, Goa, and Kerala.
