The prevailing western disturbance over North-West India has been on a weakening trend from yesterday, which has brought in some respite from the severe thunderstorm activity in the region.

The next western disturbance is not expected until Sunday, which, in turn suggests that temperatures would start rising in the absence of widespread thundershowers, squalls or hailstorm.

Mercury to rise

Thunderstorms lashed isolated places in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh until 5.30 am this morning.

India Met Department (IMD) said that drier westerly to north-westerly winds would prevail instead of moisture-laden south-westerlies or easterlies during the interregnum.

Maximum (day) temperatures would rise by two deg Celsius over Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra in North-West and adjoining Central India.

Towards the East, temperatures would look up over parts of Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and North Interior Karnataka over the next two days.

Showers elsewhere

Normal thunderstorm activity is expected to continue in East India and South Peninsular India with many Met subdivisions experiencing it until 5.30 am this morning.

They included Coastal and Interior Karnataka, Telangana, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Goa, South Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Bengal and the North-East.

The principal weather-making features as observed this morning include the weakening western disturbance over Nepal and Sikkim, which is moving out of the country.

Others are cyclonic circulations over Assam, Lakshadweep, North Kerala and Comorin. A trough ran down from East Bihar to Interior Odisha across East Jharkhand with a circulation over hills of Bengal.

A typical pre-monsoon 'wind discontinuity' (an area where winds suddenly change direction) linked North Interior Karnataka to South Interior Tamil Nadu across South Interior Karnataka.

Thunderstorms for South

Thunderstorms with hail are forecast over Bengal and Sikkim for today, while thunderstorms are forecast for the North-East, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puduherry and Kerala.

Heavy rain is forecast at isolated places over South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala. Heat wave conditions are likely for Vidarbha and Interior Odisha.

Satellite morning pictures show clouds having moved out of North-West India to South-East Nepal and adjoining Sikkim, hills and plains of Bengal and Bangladesh.

In the South, they had rolled up until Goa from Kozhikode in Kerala while huge parcels filled the open waters of the Arabian Sea covering Lakshadweep, the Maldives, and midway to East Africa coast.
