India’s tea exports so far this calendar have posted gain on volume, value and price fronts.

According to the latest information available with the Tea Board of India, the country exported 154.11 million kg (mkg) till August against 150.29 mkg in January-August 2017, marking a gain of 2.54 per cent.

The volume shipped increased despite a marginal rise in the price due to better demand. The average price fetched rose to ₹197.31 a kg from ₹196.45 in the eight months of last calendar, recording a marginal gain of 0.44 per cent.

With more teas being shipped at a higher price, the overall export earnings also posted an increase – to ₹3,040.74 crore from ₹2,952.44 crore in the eight months of the last calendar, marking a gain of 2.99 per cent.

At this rate, exporters contend that the overall shipments in 2018 would rise to around 255 mkg from 251.91 mkg recorded in the full year of 2017.

Increased rupee value against dollar exchange rate may help the overall earnings from these shipments also to rise to about ₹5,100 crore from last calendar’s earnings of ₹4,987.59 crore, exporters anticipate.

However, the unit price of the exported teas is feared to remain almost stagnant at ₹197 to ₹198 a kg.
