After a farmer from Nashik sent a money order for ₹1,064 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to draw his attention to the crisis being faced by onion farmers, a delegation of farmers from the district met Modi recently and demanded that the government provide a grant of ₹500 per quintal to onion farmers to meet losses.

Nashik accounts for 50 per cent of onion production in India. Farmers here have been complaining of falling rates of the produce in the wholesale market.

The delegation, which included local MP, MLA and farmers, submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding that along with the grant, the government must also consider supporting farmers to export onion. Farmers told the PM that onion farmers are suffering heavy losses as prices that were above the ₹28/kg have dipped to ₹1/kg.

According to the traders in Nashik’s wholesale market, the stock of stored onions is coming to the markets along with the newly harvested Kharif crop which has caused major distress to farmers.

Meanwhile, according to the sources, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (Nafed) has been directed by the Centre to increase the buffer stock from 5,000 tonnes to 25,000 tonnes.
