Only 40 per cent of the turmeric placed for sale was sold at Erode markets due to poor upcountry demand.

“The sale as well as the price of the commodity is very low in all the turmeric sale centres in India such as Warangal, Nizamabad and Sangli. This is due to poor demand from upcountry traders,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

On Tuesday, 5,000 bags of turmeric arrived for sale and only a few bags were of good quality. 2,020 bags were sold.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,568-7,459 a quintal; the root variety ₹4,585-7,018. Of the arrival of 1,141 bags, 340 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric traded at ₹6,630-7,516 and the root variety ₹6,199-7,055. Of the 693 bags offered, 631 were traded.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric fetched ₹6,119-7,266; the root variety ₹6,054-7,029. Of the 1,232 bags placed for sale, 1,224 found takers.
