North-West India is bracing for another low-pressure weather, the second in as many weeks, as an ‘intense’ western disturbance looms large in the horizon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has located the system over Iran and the neighbourhood, some distance upstream across the international border to the West-North-West on Tuesday.

Under its influence, an ‘induced low’ is likely to form over West Rajasthan, again for a second time, by Thursday, promising another round of heavy snow, rain, thunder-showers and hailstorms.

Heavy rain/snow is predicted at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rain is forecasted for Punjab.

The IMD warned that a thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorms and gusty winds will hit isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh. The same is also likely for Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, the IMD warning said.

On Friday, the extreme weather will spread out to East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

Thunderstorms predicted

Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning have been forecast for Bihar, Bengal, Sikkim and Odisha. According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied with lightning are likely at isolated places over Bihar, Bengal, Sikkim and Odisha on Saturday. Meanwhile, thunderstorms accompanied with gusty winds may fan out to South Kerala and South Tamil Nadu as the Bay of Bengal sends down easterly winds.

Already, a weather-making trough in easterlies in the Maldives-Comorin area is starting to enter the South-East Arabian Sea off Kerala. This is attracting moist easterly winds from across the Bay, triggering showers in the South.

An existing cyclonic circulation over the East-Central Arabian Sea and adjoining Konkan area has shifted towards the Karnataka coast.

Another disturbance

During the 24 hours ended Tuesday morning, rain or thundershowers hit isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep.

Overall, the rainfall activity for North-West India is likely to shift towards the East by Friday. Strong winds with speed reaching 40- 50 km per hour may lash plains of the North-West and Central India on Thursday.

Meanwhile, in keeping with an endless string of incoming western disturbances, another is forecast to visit North-West India from Sunday. It will affect the Western Himalayan region from Sunday and then adjoining plains of North-West India from Monday. Scattered to fairly widespread rain/snow is likely for the hills.

Scattered to fairly widespread rain/thunder-showers are likely over North-East India; isolated rain or thunder-showers over the plains of the North-West, eastern parts of South Peninsular India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
