The Mangalore airport, one of the important non-metro airports in the country, is aiming to register an operating profit of around Rs 6 crore during the current financial year.

Sources in Airports Authority of India told Business Line that the airport is likely to achieve revenue of Rs 32.88 crore and an expenditure of Rs 26 crore during the current financial year.

User development fees

Till February-end, the airport collected around Rs 5.91 crore of user development fees (UDF). Airports Authority of India started levying UDF for embarking passengers at Mangalore airport from September 1, 2010. Airports Authority of India levies UDF of Rs 150 for embarking domestic passengers and Rs 825 for embarking international passengers.

Projections

Asked about the revenue and expenditure projections for the next financial year, sources said that the airport wants to record revenue of Rs 43.12 crore and expenditure of Rs 30.92 crore for 2011-12.

All these figures are estimations and not the final figures, they said.

Gulf operations

Mangalore airport, which was in red till 2005-06, made an operating profit of Rs 83 lakh in 2006-07. It recorded an operating loss of Rs 2.8 crore in 2005-06.

The implementation of various development projects in the recent years and the operation of flights to Gulf destinations have contributed a major share in the growth of profit at Mangalore airport.

Development works

Since 2002, the Airport Authority of India has taken up various development works such as the construction of the second runway at the airport at a cost of nearly Rs 60 crore and the construction of the new terminal building at a cost of Rs 158 crore.

The international operations began from Mangalore in 2006.

The international passengers contribute a major share to the total passenger movements at the airport.
