GVK Group’s Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which operates the Kempegowda International Airport, has begun work on the second runway and is in the process of planning for the design of the new terminal building.

“The ground work on the second run-way has commenced already which includes levelling and other earth work,” Bhaskar B, senior director-finance and support services, BIAL, told BusinessLine .

As for the second terminal building, BIAL has began consultations with users – airlines, State Government and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and concessionaries, for coming up with design and requirements needed by the stakeholders. “Complete design and the budget for the building, including runway, will be finalised in six months,” he said.

He expects both the second runway and terminal building to be operational by 2020.

Passenger traffic

When completed, the new terminal will accommodate 55 million passengers in a 30-year period.

At present, the airport is handling around 15 million passengers, which is expected to go up to 20 million by year 2020.

According to GV Sanjay Reddy, Managing Director of BIAL, the airport catered to 15.4 million passengers in 2014-15.

As of June 2015, the average air traffic movements per day was 400 while average passenger traffic at KIAB was 48,800 per day.

The ratio of domestic-international passenger stands at 86.5:13.5.

Thirty-nine airlines currently operate from this airport, of which 29 are international airlines.

Terminal One expansion

BIAL will seen no cost escalation for its Terminal One expansion.

Bhaskar said the ₹1,530-crore expansion was started in 2012 and completed in 2014.

After the expansion, the capacity has doubled to 1,50,000 square meters.
