Testing flight The airport in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is a test of nerves and skill for pilots who are often caught between crosswinds. Theairport's 1.6-km runway was extended several times, especially after the crash of TAP Air Portugal flight in 1977 that killed 131 passengers.
