Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday inaugurated and dedicated to the nation a latest facility for experimental hydro dynamics for testing ship models and submerged bodies – seakeeping and manoeuvring basin.

Commending the Naval Science and Technology Laboratory for building the facility in Visakhapatnam, the minister said it could be used even by civilian shipbuilders.

The facility helps test models to predict sea-keeping and manoeuvring performance of newly designed ships and submerged bodies under different environmental conditions and for optimising the motion characteristics of the hull form and effectiveness of the control devices under various manoeuvres.

The Rs 168-crore project has been designed and developed using Indian equipment. The minister formally handed over the advanced anti-torpedo defence system – Maareech – designed and developed by NSTL in coordination with the Navy.

He also handed over an expendable decoy to Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan. Already 40 systems have been produced and are being deployed in the Indian Navy ships.

Varunastra – the heavy torpedo – designed and developed by NSTL had already gone through user evaluation trials and was waiting for clearance to go into production.

The coordination between Navy and DRDO is worth emulating by other arms, the Minister said, referring to the projects delivered by NSTL.

Parrikar gave away DRDO Technology Awards for 2013 on the occasion.
