V O Chidambaranar Port in South India has registered 27.56 per growth in traffic for the financial year ending July 2015 over the corresponding 12 months of the previous year.

Claiming this to be the highest growth among all major ports in the country, S Anantha Chandra Bose, Chairman, V O Chidambaranar Port Trust, said the port handled traffic of 13.06 million tonnes during the 12 months ending July 2015, up from 10.23 mt in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The major cargo that contributed to the achievements included coal (43 per cent) and containers (32 per cent), with fertiliser, copper concentrate, construction materials, liquid cargo, and other bulk/ break bulk accounting for the remaining volume.

The port achieved a growth of 13.17 per cent last year and surpassed the Ministry of Shipping’s target of 32 mt, Bose said.
