AP Transco on Wednesday assured consumers that the power supply situation is comfortable thus far, and was confident that the State is not likely to face much trouble during the ensuing summer months.

The Chairman and Managing Director of AP Transco, Mr.Ajai Jain, said, “Transco is currently supplying about 240 million units per day and serving over 22 million consumers. Due to the current power-generation situation and additional arrangements made for supplies, we do not have any plan for load-shedding.”

Speaking at Advantage AP, Mr Jain said the State has transmission and distribution losses of about 18.34 per cent, amongt the lowest compared to Karnataka (21 per cent), Maharashtra (23 per cent), Gujarat (24 per cent) and Tamil Nadu (18 per cent). Efforts are on to wipe out the these losses by 2014.

The State has an installed capacity of 15,067 MW, and is set to add another 1,641 MW by March 2012, which includes 709 MW by AP Genco and 932 MW from Central generating stations.

“What is significant is [that] we have nearly 16,862 MW under various stages of implementation, which will be ready by the end of the 12th Plan period, effectively doubling the total installed capacity,” he said.

The new capacity addition includes 6,482 MW of AP Genco, 1,200 MW by Singareni Collieries, 2,390 MW by Central generating stations of NTPC near Visakhapatnam and Kudigi, and 4,790 MW from ultra-mega power project and from merchant power supplies. “Therefore, we envisage a power-surplus situation by 2014,” he explained.

In addition, AP Transco has tied up with 19 merchant power plants, which are set to create additional power generation capacity of about 15,920 MW in the State.

As part of the ongoing expansion and consolidation of transmission networks, about Rs 8,000 crore is being invested by the distribution companies over the next four years to strengthen the supply grid, Mr Jain said.
