The indefinite strike by over 1.25 lakh powerloom units in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, demanding a 100 per cent increase in work charges, entered its second day today, resulting in a production loss of about Rs 35 crore, the Powerloom Cloth Manufacturers’ Association said.
Nearly two lakh workers of these units in Palladam, Avanashi, Perumanallur, Mangalam and Thekkalur struck work yesterday following the failure of talks with the association.
About 1.25 crore metres of fabric are made at these units in a single day.
Representatives of powerloom units are expected to meet on September 3 to decide on their future course of action, even as bipartite talks between the powerloom owners and employees are scheduled on September 5, industry sources said.
