The pre-engineered steel building sector is now seeking to replicate its success with installations for homes and small institutional buildings.

Having successfully deployed pre-fabricated steel buildings, mostly for industrial units, commercial and public spaces, the Rs 12,000-crore pre-fab building sector players are now seeking to lure people with this solution, P. Surya Prakash, Chairman of National Conference on Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings and Precast Concrete Structures, said.

Speaking at the two-day conference, Surya Prakash said pre-cast construction work has made swift strides and a number of structures have already been built by construction companies such as L&T, Tata Group and JSW.

This globally tested construction process is now being deployed by some of the companies in India. They have developed residential colonies and are now seeking to popularise the concept to constructing new housing colonies, he said.

“Pre-engineering buildings can be deployed in nearly half-the-time compared to conventional re-enforced cement and concrete structures and we are now able to deploy them at lower cost,’’ he said.

Rajiv Thakur, Regional Manager-Structural Group, Eastern Region, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd, said that the company has already developed and produced products that meet the requirements for constructing houses.

It is possible to quickly construct ground plus three floor units. The company has demonstrated that the cost is lower compared to conventional buildings. These steel structures are faster to deploy them, he said.
