India will continue discussions with the new US government and will wait for clarity on US President-elect Donald Trump’s position relating to trade pacts, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday.

“What each candidate said during the campaign is one thing. We need to know what position the US President-elect will take. We will wait for that,” Sitharaman said at the Economic Editors’ Conference.

She was responding to a question on the impact of Trump’s win on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

During his campaign, Trump had opposed the TPP, which the US has been negotiating with 11 other countries, and had called for more protectionist measures. Meanwhile, India has been negotiating the RCEP, which too will be affected if the TPP does not go through.

Sitharaman also said India would share a brief profile of the contribution of Indian companies to the US economy with the new government.

“We will continue to negotiate with the new government there even when the new President takes charge in January,” she said when asked about concerns over the Trump government’s position on immigration and outsourcing.

The US is India’s second largest trade partner and single biggest export destination.

Earlier in the day, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had also said that everyone should respect the US Presidential verdict, which has been given by the largest democracy in the world.

To encourage exports Meanwhile, Sitharaman also said the government is trying to encourage exports and is also looking at more markets such as Iran and African countries. “Services market is also keeping pace,” she said.

While India will push for exports of tea, steel and rice to Iran, it will also make project exports to African countries.
