GSM-based mobile operators added 13.7 million new subscribers in January, taking the overall user base to 556 million. Bharti Airtel, with 3.3 million new subscribers, topped the charts, followed by Vodafone Essar with 3.1 million. BSNL got 2.2 million, while Idea Cellular managed 2.5 million new users. The impact of Mobile Number Portability is not yet visible because the facility was launched countrywide only on January 20, and the numbers released by the Cellular Operators Association of India is up to January 31.
Bharti is the market leader with a total of 155 million users, and Vodafone is at the second spot with 127 million subscribers. Among the new players, Uninor got 1.79 million new users, taking its tally to over 20 million.
Videocon lost about one thousand subscribers in January. Etisalat DB got 1.87 lakh new users and STel added 1.99 lakh to their total.
