The Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee looking into the alleged 2G scam on Thursday said that he will met the Speaker to find out how two Parliament committees can simultaneously investigate the same issue.

Referring to the parallel probe being done by the Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) headed by BJP leader Mr Murli Manohar Joshi, Mr P.C. Chacko said that while the JPC is supposed to look into the entire issue to know whether the decisions taken by the Government were right or wrong, the PAC should look into the issue of waste of public money.

“Members of the committee were unanimous that parallel probe by two committees of Parliament inquiring into the same issue was not good. The final reports (of the two committees) could be same and could also differ,” Mr Chacko said.

Briefing reporters after the JPC meeting on Thursday, Mr Chacko also said that 7-8 members of the JPC were part of the decision-making process in the telecom sector between 1998 and 2008, and therefore, the Speaker would be consulted if these Ministers can be part of a committee which is reviewing the telecom policies formulated during that period. All members of the JPC have been told to declare if there was any conflict of interest or not.

Mr Chacko said that a notice will be issued soon to invite comments and suggestions from the public. “If we get any good ideas we will ask the person to appear before the JPC,” he said.

The Committee will meet next on May 18 and a report will be submitted during the Monsoon session.
