Bharti Airtel and Aircel on Monday announced that they will launch Apple's iPhone 4 in India soon. The two operators did not give the exact timing or the price of the device. The phone was launched by Apple in the US market almost a year ago.

The last few months have seen the launch of a number of high-end smart phones in the Indian market, including Nokia's N8, Sony Ericsson's Xperia and BlackBerry's Torch. With the launch of 3G-enabled services by mobile operators, analysts expect a surge in smart phone usage. Currently, it accounts for less than 5 per cent of the market.

Bharti and Vodafone Essar already sell earlier models of the iPhone in India priced at over Rs 35,000. But since Indian operators do not follow a subsidy model like in the US, the high-end handsets have not found many takers. According to market watchers, the iPhone 4 could be priced at over Rs 40,000 for the 32GB version and the 16GB version at roughly Rs 37,000. This could push down the price of iPhone 3G.
