While customers are known to pay a huge premium for fancy car registration numbers, it is not so well known that such a craze exists for mobile numbers as well.
State-owned BSNL has launched a bidding process for premium GSM numbers through an e-auction in Tamil Nadu along with several other states.
In a release issued here, BSNL said that the bidding for ‘GSM Premium number e- auction’ for the Tamil Nadu circle that began on May 6 would end on May 13.

Intending bidders could log on to the Web site - http://eauction.bsnl.co.in- to register themselves for taking part in the Web-based auction of GSM premium mobile numbers.
For bidding process, they could register through BSNL portal or through SMS from their registered mobile numbers.
The bidding would be on a first-come first-serve basis to accept the bidding and in return will update all the remaining bidders.
On closing date, successful bidders can approach the nearest customer service centre to complete the formalities and get the SIM after payment of the bid amount.
BSNL said GSM numbers ending with five ‘1’s, five ‘4’s, five ‘5’s, five ‘7’s, four ‘0’s, four ‘1’s, four ‘2’s, four ‘5’s, and four ‘9’s were presently available for bidding in the e-auction. Explaining the logic behind the move, BSNL said mobile numbers that had certain ‘specific sequence’ making ‘communication identity simpler’ were known as ‘Vanity/Fancy/Premium Numbers’.
These numbers were segregated into different patterns based on their sequence of repetition and representation.
Since the demand for them was high, they were pooled for auction in which individuals could participate to get the number of their choice.
Several states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Madya Pradesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh have completed the e-auction.
In States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab, the bidding has opened.
In Kerala bidding would begin on May 10, according to the information available on the BSNL site.
