EMC and Cisco have together launched their Cloud Experience Centres (CEC) in Bangalore.

The joint launch of the two centres, located at the EMC Centre of Excellence and at the Cisco Globalization Centre East, is said to be the first-of-its-kind collaboration between the two IT companies globally.

Speaking to Business Line , Mr Manoj Chugh, President, EMC India and Saarc; and Mr Naresh Balwant Wadhwa, President and Country Manager, Cisco Systems (India) Pvt Ltd, said that customers in India could leverage the joint capabilities of the companies to get a feel of what cloud computing could do for their own enterprises.

“The network is the platform and users want to know how they can leverage it. That is why EMC, Cisco and VMware came together to create Vblock, which gives access to storage and computing resources anywhere,” said Mr Wadhwa.

Mr Chugh, pointing out the importance of cloud computing from a storage perspective, said, “Data requirements are growing at the rate of 60 per cent a year, while IT budgets are growing at the rate of 20 per cent a year. Also, 70 per cent of the IT budget is used just to keep things running, while only 30 per cent is used to deliver business benefits.”

Using the cloud, he said, could free up additional IT resources.

The growth of rural India will also be a big driver for cloud computing, said Mr Wadhwa. “Right now, 50 million to 60 million are in the banking network. Over the next 10 years, some 700 million people will be a part of the banking network. They will keep only a small amount in their bank accounts, but will demand the sort of services that city dwellers will ask for.”

The only way banks can ensure this is by going in for the cloud, he said.

While Cisco and EMC could have jointly setup a single CEC, Mr Wadhwa and Mr Chugh said that they went in for separate centres because many of their clients traditionally have multiple data centres spread across geographies. “We also wanted to show them that the service will be the same irrespective of whom you speak to,” said Mr Wadhwa.

Traditionally, small companies have embraced the cloud, while larger entities have resisted because of privacy fears. However, this is also changing, said Mr Chugh. “Large organisations will deploy private clouds within the organisation, which gives them the benefits without the security fears.”
