Here's a brand new unchartered territory for IT application developers. They can now aspire to build applications as lakhs of cars around the world are being connected to the Web and mobile networks.

Automobile maker Ford will showcase its open source app development platform OpenXC at Nasscom Leadership Forum here on Thursday, as it plans to provide IT-solutions such as voice controls in entry level and mid-segment cars.

OpenXC is an open-source hardware and software platform developed by Ford Research and Innovation and US-based Bug Labs to provide local developers to produce applications, taking advantage of mobile connectivity.

Ford would give access to IT tools to developers to churn out applications to offer car owners services such as voice-based controls to use mobile phones, get alerts on traffic jams and rainfall.

“The idea is to remove barriers for innovation by giving IT tool kits. We are going to sandbox (test) before taking them on board. We have launched this research platform in San Francisco last year,” Mr K. Venkatesh Prasad, Group and Senior technical Leader, Vehicle Design and Infotronics of Ford Research and Innovation, told Business Line .

But for now these applications will be restricted to Ford vehicles.

“We believe that car is a computing platform. We can have voice control of phones and other gadgets,” he said.
