Omega Healthcare Management Services, a healthcare BPO/KPO, plans to hire over 1,000 people by March 2012, taking its total employee count to over 4,300.

Several of these recruits will be roped into its recently opened centre in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu. The company also has centres in Chennai and Bangalore which have around 1,500-1,600 employees each. The Tiruchi facility has 190 employees. Florida-based Omega Healthcare is an offshore provider of medical coding, billing, accounts receivable management, claims processing and healthcare revenue management services. The qualification for medical coding is a graduation in life sciences. Omega works with revenue cycle management providers (essentially billing and coding companies) which in turn contract with physicians and hospitals.

Omega is hiring at a time when the US is going through a financial crisis and there is backlash against Indians taking away jobs. Says Mr Gopi Natarajan, CEO: “Whenever there is any negative news in the US, there is a backlash. Even last time when the US President Mr Obama took over, there was news of job cuts. But the reality is, in the last 12 months, IT companies have had a blockbuster ride.”

The US has a market thriving economy and companies will go to any place in the world which drives profits, emphasised Mr John Fundingsland, COO. Adds Mr Natarajan: “The advantage we have is we are in the recession-proof healthcare space. We are committed to hiring in India. Apart from being cost effective, the tier-2 city of Tiruchi has amazing talent with access to good educational institutions and feeder colleges. We are also in the process of setting up an incubation training centre in tie-up with a university in Tiruchi.”

Omega spends close to $18 million annually in India.
