IT training company NIIT Ltd on Monday announced a strategic alliance with US-based Zend Technologies to offer training programmes and courses on PHP Web technology.

PHP is programming language used for building Web applications and it runs an estimated 35 per cent of the world's Web sites including popular ones such as Facebook and Yahoo. NIIT says it plans to train about 80,000 professionals on this technology over the next three years.

“NIIT will offer training programmes on PHP and Zend Framework to create a talent pool of PHP developers and Zend Certified Engineers. The courses – with duration of up to eight months – will be initially offered through 50 centres starting next month and it will be scaled to 250 centres in three years,” Mr Vijay K Thadani, Chief Executive Officer of NIIT Ltd, said.

California-headquartered Zend Technologies, is a provider of software and services for developing, deploying and managing PHP applications for on-premise and cloud computing environments. With an increasing number of companies choosing PHP as their platform for building Web applications, there is a rising demand for skilled PHP professionals globally. Some of the most popular social networks and applications such as Drupal, WordPress, and Magento were also built on PHP. Companies such as AT&T, GE, France Telecom/Orange, Fiat Automotive, Cisco, Lufthansa and NYSE Euronext have opted for Zend PHP solutions for their web applications.

NIIT expects the demand for PHP training to be high in India, given the increase in broadband penetration, mobile applications and e-governance applications, said Mr Thadani.

Mr Siddhartha Agarwal, Vice-President, Americas and Emerging Markets Field Operations, Zend Technologies, said, “Zend recognises India as a key market for developing and nurturing talent to build applications using PHP as the programming language.”

Customising for India

As part of this tie-up, Zend will provide NIIT with its training curriculum for PHP, Zend Framework, and Zend software product training. The two companies will also customise the content for absorption within the Indian market and NIIT will deliver the courses through its network of training centres across various cities. The programme will be initially offered in India, and subsequently launched in other parts of the Asia-Pacific region and emerging markets.

Working professionals and graduates can sign up for these courses; an eight-month course is priced at Rs 50,000.
