Pantel Technologies is increasing its tablet personal computer manufacturing in Bangalore.

This is following an ‘overwhelming' demand for its low-cost Penta tablets, especially from Gujarat, said a company official.

“We sell nearly 2,000 tablets a week in Gujarat. This was much more than what we anticipated,” said the company's Chief Operating Officer, Mr Sanjeev Khera.

Since the launch of the Penta tablets along with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd three months ago, the company has sold nearly one lakh units in circles such as Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

“We hope to get the same kind of response in Tamil Nadu,” he told Business Line on the sidelines of the launch of Penta tablets with BSNL's 2G and 3G data plans.

Pantel has two plants – one in Bangalore and the other in Noida – with a combined manufacturing capacity of 1.5 lakh tablet PCs a month.

However, the Bangalore plant alone will start supplying two lakh units a month, he said.

Online orders

Mr Khera said through online, the company has got orders to supply nearly five lakh units.

Pantel claimed to have come up with the world's first laptop with a built-in 3G SIM card slot. This enables a “hot switch-on” Internet access in those areas of India where wireless is yet to reach and make an impact.

Likewise, when a consumer buys the company's devices, they also get access to ‘complimentary' school education content.

High range products

BSNL has an alliance with Pantel to launch data plans bundled with a range of Penta tablets.

BSNL and Pantel have launched two higher range products with two different screen sizes (7” and 8”).

Both the devices have capacitive touch screen with in-built 3G module.
