Tata Consultancy Services wants the Department of Electronics & IT (DeitY) to crack down on scamsters who lure gullible job seekers into paying large sums of money by claiming to be hiring on behalf of the company.
TCS, the country’s largest IT employer, wants the Government to block domains from where fake job-offer letters originate, said Ajoy Mukherjee, Executive Vice-President and Global Head for Human Resources.
According to industry watchers, often the bogus letters are sent from websites that look like or are variations of the company’s official website — TCS.com.
“In addition to several other measures that we take, we have requested DeitY to block some of these domains. We have not officially written to DeitY on this, but we have discussed it with them,” Mukherjee told Business Line .
The modus operandi of the scamsters is to send emails promising job seekers of interview calls from top IT firms from fake or free domains, such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!.
The job seekers are then asked to deposit anywhere from Rs 8,000 to Rs 1 lakh in a bank account. Such rackets are a major challenge to the HR heads of India’s $108-billion software services industry as thousands of job-seekers are duped every year.
In October, this racket made headlines when Tech Mahindra realised that nearly 50 job-seekers had been cheated by a gang. These candidates had paid upwards of Rs 9,000 to the fraudsters. Tech Mahindra approached DeitY last year to ban domain names that are look-alikes of the company’s official websites — techmahindra.com and mahindrasatyam.com.
Other IT majors such as Wipro, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp and HCL Technologies too have been targeted by fraudsters. This has prompted top IT companies to clearly articulate on their websites that they do not charge any fee at any stage of the recruitment process.
In addition, TCS has been running newspaper campaigns across the country on how job-seekers can distinguish a real job offer from the fake, said Mukherjee. Moreover, every offer from TCS now comes with a distinguishable quick response code which can be validated on its website, he added.
In the coming months, TCS is set to become the country’s first IT company to have over 3 lakh employees on its rolls. It ended Q3 with a staff strength of 2,90,713.
Next fiscal, the company will add 25,000 employees through campus recruitment.
