Gurgaon-based telecom tower firm Viom Networks is working with Japan’s NEDO (The New Energy and Industrial Technology Department), a public management organisation, to reduce diesel consumption at some of its sites.
The two have already signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard, people aware of the development told Business Line .
NEDO is Japan's largest public management organisation promoting research and development and deployment of industrial, energy and environmental technologies.
According to sources, NEDO has already begun a study to determine the number of sites where it plans to work on and also on the alternative technology, mostly renewable energy, which it wants to introduce.
It is also looking at remote control or management to these mobile phone towers. Investments in technology and energy saving solutions are to be made by NEDO, sources said.
Viom is the country’s second largest telecom tower company with over 42,000 sites. The tie-up with NEDO comes up as its latest attempt to reduce diesel consumption thereby reducing operational costs.
At least 50 per cent of Viom’s sites (nearly 21,000) are said to be “diesel generator free”.
This follows a conscious effort by the company to reduce dependence on generators for supplying continuous power to the towers.
According to industry sources, there are over 350,000 telecom towers in the country and a substantial number of them are still not connected to the power grid.
