Telecom service provider Vodafone Essar on Monday launched solar-power mobile handset – VF 247, in the Tamil Nadu market. Priced at Rs 1,500, the handset is aimed at subscribers in hilly and regiment forest areas where there is inadequate supply of electricity but adequate sunlight.
“There is inbuilt hardware and software to ensure that the phone charges also in a room under normal daylight,” says Mr R. Suresh Kumar, Chief Operating Officer, Vodafone Essar South Ltd. According to him, the phones are sourced from a couple of manufacturers in China and sold under the Vodafone brand in all outlets and in a few multi-brand retail outlets
