Keeping up its attack on former Finance Minister P Chidambaram after raising the Ishrat Jahan issue, the BJP on Wednesday once again targeted him in the Lok Sabha by raking up the Aircel-Maxis case.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, BJP member Nishikant Dubey referred to “recent developments” following raids by the Enforcement Directorate on firms linked to the “scam”, alleging that the former Finance Minister’s grand-daughter was the beneficiary of certain deals.

Dubey said “one of the raids had revealed that the grand-daughter of the former Finance Minister was the sole beneficiary in the will of four shareholders of a firm associated with the scam, making it an open and shut case.”

Without naming Chidambaram, Dubey also alleged that his son (Karti) enjoyed ownership of some of the suspect firms having assets abroad.

Congress, which had repeatedly been seeking a debate on the Agusta Westland chopper deal since the House began in the morning, and which was disallowed by the Speaker, rose up in protest.

Chopper issue

Party MP Jyotiraditya Scindia was heard asking the Speaker as to why “double standards” were being adopted as the party was not allowed to raise the chopper scam issue on which it had given notice for an adjournment motion, but this one was allowed.

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members B Mahtab and Tathagata Satpathy demanded the government’s response in the Aircel-Maxis matter.

In the last session, too, the BJD had raised the issue along with the AIADMK.
