The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has further extended the last date for public response on draft Personal Data Protection Bill to October 10.

This is the second time the Ministry has extended the deadline for public feedback. Recently, the Ministry extended the deadline to September 30 from its earlier deadline September 10 owing to requests from various quarters. Justice BN Srikrishna Committee submitted the draft of Personal Data Protection Bill on July 27 that makes explicit consent mandatory and ensures that the data are only used for purposes it was intended in the first place.

Failing to meet these provisions can cost companies dear, with the bill laying down penalties that can go up to ₹15 crore or 4 per cent of a company’s total worldwide turnover.

The report and draft is available on the MeitY website.
