Millions of Facebook users were unable to log in or update their status for several hours on Monday.
It was a rare glitch for the social networking site, which prompted a tirade of angry and ironic comments on rival Twitter.
Many Facebook users received error messages. Some people who were able to log on to the site found they were unable to post a status update, instead receiving another error message.
Shorn of their social media fix, many took to Twitter to express their frustration.
“Thank God we have Twitter so we still don’t have to actually talk to anyone,” was one comment.
The glitch lasted a few hours until Facebook technicians managed to fix the problem.
“Earlier this morning, while performing some network maintenance, we experienced an issue that prevented some users from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time,” said a Facebook spokesman.
“We resolved the issue quickly. We’re sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused.”
