In a major breakthrough, the Andhra Pradesh Government has clinched a big deal with mobile handset firms in the country to house the first mobile manufacturing hub.
The Indian Cellular Association (ICA), which had been scouting for an ideal location to locate the hub, has zeroed in on Tirupati after getting assurances on taxes and fast track logistics support to connect to Chennai.
The Rs 1, 000-crore facility is coming up at Tirupati in 65 acres with an initial employment potential of 10,000 jobs.
Major mobile manufacturing firms such as Micromax, Karbonn and Celkon Mobiles are going to set up anchor units at the facility.
A number of ancillary units would also come up at the hub. The State Government has agreed to waive off Value Added Tax (VAT) for 10 years, giving an upfront reduction of price sold in the State.
ICA had spoken to several state governments to develop the hub in a bid to make India self-sufficient in handset production.
The industry players are likely to sign the deal tonight.
