Korean electronics major Samsung has said it will continue to hire people in India.

Amidst speculation that the company is laying off people in India due to internal restructuring, the company claimed it has created 2,000 jobs in the country over the past year. However, it neither confirmed nor denied any lay-off plans.

“Samsung is committed to India and continues to invest significantly across its businesses. We have demonstrated our commitment by building the world’s largest mobile factory in Noida, investing in local R&D, and we are exploring new businesses such as 5G network,” the company said when contacted by BusinessLine .

Samsung this year has had a spate of smartphone launches in its M series and A series across price points, aimed at regaining lost ground. The company also recently launched new tablets and premium televisions.

Emphasising that its India business is expanding, Samsung said it will continue to hire through the year. “As we contribute to job creation, we continuously realign resources per business priorities to make our business more robust and efficient for long-term success,” the Samsung statement added.

However, Samsung did not elaborate on how this realignment will take place. It also did not comment on lay-off speculations.

Samsung is a significant player in the smart TV and home appliances segments. Both the smartphone and consumer electronics segments have been witnessing increased competition largely due to the emergence of Chinese players.

Samsung has come under pressure from Xiaomi, which has dethroned it as the Number 1 smartphone player in India. Its marketshare in the first quarter of 2019 was at 23 per cent, behind Xiaomi’s 29 per cent, data from research firm Counterpoint reveal.
