Are you an app (application) developer? Take up this challenge, then. The International Telecom Union (ITU) has announced a global Application Challenge to encourage developers to create innovative applications for internet TV or Internet Protocol Television.

The best app would get about Rs 4.5 lakhs! These apps, however, should conform to the standards set by the United Nations body that governs issues related to telecom and broadband across the globe.

Developers could churn out apps in the areas of broadcast TV, video-on-demand, games, e-governance, e-commerce, photo albums and e-learning.

“Applicants are encouraged to think creatively about the IPTV platform and the opportunities it offers. Individuals, small and medium businesses can send in their entries,” ITU said here in a statement on Thursday.

People could register their candidature by September 16 and submit their apps by September 23, 2011. “Companies from Brazil, China, Japan, Korea and France have already implemented ITU’s IPTV standards in commercial TV and set-top boxes. In China and Japan, ITU IPTV is already deployed with several million subscribers. Test beds would soon start in India, Canada and China,” it said.

There is a separate category for corporate entries. Winners will receive their awards at a special event at the ITU Telecom World 2011 show to be held in in Geneva in October.
